There’s
a hush over the crowd as Bryan Adams begins his next ballad. Phones
hanging out of pockets, hands are swaying high in the air and the
lights cast a soft glow on the singer strumming his guitar. Then all
of a sudden, a shadow begins to appear behind the crowd.
Is
it a ghost? Is it an illusion? Is it Cloud
Number 9?
Nope. It’s Bryan Adam’s shadow silhouetted against the infamous
Delhi smog which is the Every Year Trend Now.
After his Delhi concert on Sunday wrapped up his India tour, Canadian singer Bryan Adams shared a picture from the performance that he claimed was ‘magical’ in all the terms. However, others pointed out it shows how bad the pollution in the national capital is.

The
Grammy award-winning singer shared a photo on his Instagram account
in which his shadow hovers over the audience, thanks and credit to
the dust in the air at Leisure Valley Park in Gurgaon, the venue of
his last concert in India.
He captioned it as, “New Delhi, India, you were incredible tonight. In this photo, if you look carefully you can see my shadow silhouetted in the dust and smoke of the venue over the audience. I’ve never seen that before. Magical India. Namaste.”
Although this may seem like a pretty picture, it’s also a clear sign of the rising pollution that residents of the Delhi-National Capital Region are bracing themselves for this winter. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the air quality in Delhi is one of the worst in the world. The Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 4pm on Monday, 15 October was 218 which falls under the ‘poor’ category according to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR). The government has now rolled out an emergency plan which includes a ban on garbage burning, mechanised sweeping of roads, impounding of polluting vehicles and a ban on construction activities if the pollution gets worse.

The
Badarpur Thermal Plant, Delhi’s biggest coal power plant, has also
been ordered to shut down permanently because of its contribution to
air pollution. With Diwali just around the corner, the season of
firecrackers, festivities, lights and unfortunately, pollution is
here. Let’s hope that by the time Bryan comes back to India, we
have clearer skies, Seriously!!
What
a pity it would be if everything we did, we did it in smog.
